Happy Monday! I hope everyone is enjoying reading the student spotlights and are getting to know more about our fellow colleagues. I would like to introduce this week's student, Kimberly Adams. To those of you that may not know her (yet)! She is a freshman at UT from the U.S. Virgen Islands. She resides on campus (which is great news for us commuters, if you want to know more about on campus living at UT, she's a great resource to have your questions answered).
I had Kimberly answer some questions for us so we could get to know her better and here is what she had to say:
Fun facts about you: I wear a size 3 shoe, love neon colors, and I’m fascinated by squirrels.
What is your year/major @ UT: I’m a 2013 freshman, majoring in psychology at the moment (but it’s likely that I’ll switch to some criminology/victimology type of thing).
What do you plan to do when you graduate: I want to help people that have had negative experiences speak up when it’s hard for them to do so on their own.
Living on campus- what are the pros/cons for you: Living in Stadium, it’s awesome that there’s numerous places to get food just 4 floors below me (which may or may not be a good thing!) And cons? I think the only bad thing is that my best friends don’t live in the same dorm, so I have to walk in order to visit them. But hey, that means I get to walk off the food that I ate downstairs, right?
How do you feel living on campus affects you socially/academically: It’s definitely easier for me to make friends living on campus. After a while, everyone around you starts to seem like one big family :) Academically speaking, it’s extremely beneficial because people can meet up at pretty much any place, and at any time. Working on group projects is really great if you live in Stadium because there are common/living rooms in each suite, so your roommate and suitemates won’t get distracted if they have their own work to do.
What do you like best about UT/worst: There are certain things around the school that remind me of back home in the US Virgin Islands. For example, when I visited campus last November, I noticed that there was (what we call) a tan tan tree next to the bridge. I’ve been to a few places, but I’ve never seen that tree anywhere than back home! It was quite a shocker to me. So far, the only semi-negative thing about the school is that my criminology class is larger than my high school’s graduating class! But all of my other classes are small enough to make me feel comfortable, so it’s all good :)
Advice to incoming student to UT: At some point, everyone I know here wanted to go back home, or wished they went to school closer to home. However, none of them have left. They realized that their education was on the line, and that UT is a great school to be at. If you live far away, don’t be scared! And if you are, keep this in mind: I used to visit Florida every year since I was 7, and I was never a fan. But now that I live here, I know it’s where I actually belong. I could have gone to school anywhere else in the world, but I ended up here for a reason, and I’m happy I did. My dad went to UT, my uncle went to UT, and now I go to UT. Anyone would be lucky to go to school here, and I don’t know one person that doesn’t like it!
Do you have any current websites/blogs that others can see more about you and what you do: You can find me and read more about my freshman experience at UT at
